This might better be titled Stock Market 101; anyway, from mintlife:

     It’s been an exciting couple of months for the stock market. And
     for      investors, “exciting” usually means “unsettling.”

     To make sense of what’s going on, let’s listen in on a conversation
     between an investor and a financial advisor.

If it were truely a financial advisor, he did not prepare his customer for prudent stock investing.  Some of the proper questions to ask are the investor's time horizon (when the money will be needed) and risk tolerance.  Indexing fund is not a one-siz-for -all selection with its pros/cons delineated in one of the posts here.

In sum, it is the responsiblity of both the investors and financial advisors to ensure sufficient background, knowledge, and skills are obtained before any investment decision is made.
