5% Cash Back Credit Cards: Rotating Categories Update Q1 2014

Monday, January 20, 2014 - 2:47 PM
MyMoneyBlog has a useful summary of Q1's rotating 5%-cash-back categories from Chase Freedom, Citi Dividend Platinum and the Discover it Card.

Does anyone use all three credit cards?

I mainly use Chase Freedom and Discover it. I write down the quarterly bonus of each and keep in my wallet so I know what card to use to obtain the 5% bonus. Also use the Discover and Chase shopping malls to increase the rewards.  I prefer the cash reward cards instead of the cards that offer gifts cards or miles. Discover offers an electronic transfer when you reach $50.
Chase can only send a physical check but you can request a check when you reach $20.
I am happy with both cards.

In the past had 2 of the Chase cards. One was 5% off or cash back on everything for 6 months. We used this when we built the house and purchased all new furniture, appliances, carpet, hardwood floors, electrical fixtures, bathroom stools, kitchen and bathroom cabinets and granite counter tops for the bathrooms and kitchen. We were able to use the builders discount and the Parade of Homes discount along with the 5% off. Was able to save a lot of money.

Also used the 5% cash back Chase card when they had several choices and you could choose which 6 you wanted the 5% off. I chose groceries, gas, household utilities, comcast bill, department stores and drugstores.

Now I use Pentagon 5% cash back on gasoline and Lake Michigan which has 2% off groceries and 1% off everything else. Don't purchase enough to use one for department stores. Do you the Kohl's and Target when it is a good deal. Target has 5% off everything in their store when you use their card.

I get a credit to my account with Chase Freedom, not a check.

Citi Dividend: 5% drugstore (annual maximum cashback: $300 per card)... use your imagination.

Discover: 5% restaurant ... ($75 maximum) ... Buy gift cards for your favorite restaurants.

Midatlantic- you are correct regarding the statement credit from Chase. Discover offers that as well. You can also donate your earned rewards to a charity on either card. I was only referring to the method to obtain the cash. Discover offers electronic transfer but Chase does not.
