Comparing Series I Savings Bonds With The Stock Market

Monday, July 5, 2010 - 4:54 PM
If one made regular monthly investments into Series I Savings Bonds since the program began in September 1998, you would have done better than if you did the same monthly investment into a S/P-Index fund. Tom Adams at Savings Bonds Advisor has been plotting the performance of both for seveal years. The index fund performance is currently just below the line that plots a zero return.

Unfortunately, the I bond base rates have been very low in the last few years. Tom compares the I Bond base rates with TIPS in this post.

That NYT chart reminded me to check back at Savings Bonds Advisor and his chart that compares the performance of I Bonds with the S&P 500 index. He just recently updated it to Jan 1, 2011.

After over 12 years of monthly investing, I Bonds still have outperformed. However, the S&P 500 index has gained considerably and is above the 0% returns line.
