Beware Of Wells Fargo's New Value Checking & Checking Account Changes At Other Banks
This MSN article by Liz Pulliam Weston has a good overview of how free checking might change with tips about how you can avoid future fees. Here's an example of how Wells Fargo is changing their free checking:
Wells Fargo, for example, is replacing its free and basic checking programs July 1 with something the bank calls "Value Checking." The $5 monthly service fee for this account can be waived by keeping a $1,500 average daily balance or arranging a direct deposit of at least $250 a month.
