U.K.'s National Savings Certificates

Saturday, July 24, 2010 - 2:14 PM
This won't help us any, but it's interesting to see the policies of other countries to savers. U.S. savers are not alone in dealing with an anti-savings environment.

The Independent article reported on how U.K. government hurt savers when they withdrew the index-linked National Savings Certificates. These certificates appear similar to our Series I Savings Bonds in the U.S. At least the head of that program was upfront on the reason they withdrew the certificates: it attracted too much money. The U.S. Treasury hasn't been that transparent in their decisions on setting the fixed rates on I Bonds.
