PenFed mentioned an interesting cost-cutting measure in its newsletter. They're going to end one of their toll-free numbers, the Teller member service line. It appears their members service number will remain toll-free. Here's an excerpt from their newsletter:
With the growing number of people using mobile phones as their primary source of communication and the popularity of "unlimited" long distance plans being offered by telephone companies, PenFed has looked carefully at eliminating some of our toll-free (1-800) numbers and using local numbers. This can potentially result on savings that would be returned back to you in continued low loan rates and higher deposit rates. In that vein, PenFed will replace the toll-free Telephone Teller member service line with a new number on October 6, 2010. DC metro-area callers may continue to use the local 703 area code number.
This move seems a little odd for a nationwide institution.
