Michigan Regulators Crack Down On Fake Credit Union

Wednesday, September 22, 2010 - 5:12 AM
From the Michigan government's press release:
The Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation (OFIR) has ordered an entity claiming to be aGrand Haven-based credit union called "Whitestone Credit Union" to cease and desist from doing business. OFIR believes that Whitestone, through its website, www.whitestonecreditunion.com and telephone answering service, was posing as a legitimate credit union and may have been attempting to steal consumers' money and identity.

The press release includes a Michigan government resource that can be used to verify that a Michigan credit union is legitimate. I gave it a try, and the search function doesn't work well. I would instead recommend the NCUA's credit union finder tool. You can use this to ensure a credit union is NCUA insured and to confirm its website address.
