This Consumerist article reported on the problems of a woman who is trying to withdraw the money from a $2K CD that her deceased husband had at ING Direct. She reported many problems even after she had provided all the legal paperwork.
It is important to note that ING Direct doesn't allow paid-on-death (POD) designations on its accounts. That could have made the process much easier.

They do allow you to specify a joint account holder, however, which he probably should have done while he was alive.
