The Value And Risks Of Absolute-Return Funds

Investors seeking safety in absolute-return funds may be surprised to learn that such funds tend to minimize risk but aren't likely to consistently deliver positive returns.

Not all of the funds do a good job at minimizing risk. One example mentioned in the article is the T. Rowe Price Capital Appreciation Fund which lost 27% in 2008.
