Beacon Federal

Beacon Federal Bank (5 stars)
I opened an account with Beacon Federal a few months ago. The employees have been most informed and helpful. Would recommend this account to everyone.

I like them too.   I've only had one or two questions about the account and the representatives were friendly, professional and helpful.

Their RCA offers an especially useful feature that provides you a status at login of your progress towards meeting the account requirements, which I can then confirm against my own records.

$1B bank asset.  Limited to NY, MA, TN, TX.  One account per social security number.  Online application is straightforward and fast (I think it is simply an identity check with ChexSystem verification).  It took only 2-3 business days for debit card reception.  The account comes with a free box of checks.  Free bank-to-bank (ACH) transfer is another plus.

One concern is on the security of log-in page, which is "http" rather than "https."

I received a personal hand-written welcome letter after approval.  Their friendly/family style is still of a credit union nature.

A minor inconvenience is that one is limited to 5 external links to/from the RCA and these links can only be set up through a paper form.  The form must be returned by mail or in person, along with a check or deposit slip of the target account and evidence that you own the target account (for example:  a copy of an account statement).  The trial deposits method would be far less cumbersome, but is not an option.

That is a real pain and old technology.  They sent me the initial log-in ID as "first name initial plus account number" (which seems to be my permanent log-in ID), that really did not give me a warm and fussy feeling at all.  Security and old tech are two "minor" issues, but hey, I am easy nowadays as long as it is equal/above 4% in APY ($20K is not bad, either).

Yes it is a pain but I can live with it, just have to plan a little bit further ahead to account for snail mail transit time.  As far as the login ID, you can change it through the site.

Besides obtaining a ChexSystems report (as all banks mostly do), this bank (formerly a credit union) also does a "hard pull" inquiry that will appear on your "TransUnion" credit report for up to 2 years and will most likely lower your credit score with them by a few points.

WaB,

It seems to be on a case-by-case basis.  For online applications, only five questions were asked and the approvals were automatic and spontaneous; which made me think that they were soft pulls.  On this bank thread, there were also reports (e.g., Anon. #7 of the link below) that no hard pull was done (FICO score did not change at all for the subsequent 2-3 months).

On the other hand, BF is not the only one which does hard pulls (if it is the case).  Many RCA banks I know of conduct hard pulls as well.

51hh:

If hard-pulls are conducted on a case-by-case basis, I think that would be considered a discriminatory practice by the bank.  With respect to Anon #7's comment that FICO did not change at all, he/she fails to mention whether all 3 FICO scores did not change or only 1 (and which one).  I would recommend that you call your branch manager (as I did) to see whether a TransUnion hard pull inquiry is done for all applicants.

It is ok with me if it is indeed a hard pull.  A hard pull is conducted by all credit card applications, typical banks (Ally, Cambridge Savings, FAB&T, just to name a few), and even employment, clearance, etc.  It is typically 5-7 points per pull.

But many thanks for the alert, WaB:-)

Well I wouldn't worry too much about a hard pull. I have opened 3 checking accounts, 2 savings accounts, closed one checking account and credit card and opened another credit card Since Oct. My credit score was 799 in September, Oct Nov and Dec. Has not moved. Some inquiries and hard pulls show on my annual creditreport.com I don't intend to borrow so I really don't care what it is. Just am monitoring it for free with Digital Credit Union.  But if I can do all of this and not have my credit score change I don't see what the concern is. I had a score of 770 in Jan of 2010 from the free transunion report when a banks records were compromised and have done nothing but open and close accounts and the score improved. GO FIGURE>
