Savers Need To Pay Attention For Identity Theft Risks In January

One downside of having several bank accounts is that you get many 1099s, most of which are mailed. As described in this CBS MoneyWatch Family Finance blog post, "these items contain our most personal and precious information and sit unguarded in our mailboxes." You might want to check if your banks can provide the 1099s online. ING Direct is one bank that does this.

Glad you brought it up.  This site has gotten me more comfortable opening and using multiple accounts, so it crossed my mind I'll also be getting more 1099s.  Your reminder will keep me on the lookout to account for them all sooner than later, especially since the neighborhood association has reported more mail theft incidents of late.

I share your concern about mail delivered to the home for exactly the reason you cited.  A box at the nearest post office is well worth the modest rent paid for the privacy, safety and convenience. Converting to E-statements whenever available is also helpful.
