Tips For Spotting ATM Skimmers

Tuesday, February 1, 2011 - 7:45 PM
ATM skimmers are used by thieves to steal debit card magnetic stripe data. This New York Times Bucks Blog post describes some strategies that can help you spot skimming devices. You also have to worry about your debit card being skimmed when you make purchases. For situations in which the card will leave your line of sight (like at a restaurant), it's best to use a credit card instead of a debit card.

Ok, we would be looking exactly like 007: Walk in with a subtle "inspection of environment"... Do another thorough "inspection" of ATM and security camera, touching everywhere/looking for glue, cola cans, cigarettes pack... "Cover"/protect PIN with your life/body (do the cool all-around up/down swerving dance), ...and walk out secretly with a ten-dollar bill (from ATM) hidden in my hand...

With the Pink Panther theme song in the background...

Seriously, these are good protective measures; but life could be simpler:D
