The company had 5,856 branches at the end of 2010, a 2.6 percent drop from the year earlier, and will “continue to downsize” its retail footprint, Chief Executive Officer Brian T. Moynihan told analysts last month.

In Boston, there are two full branches literally across the street from each other, right next to the Tremont and State intersection.  BofA isn't Starbucks, which intentionally cannibalizes its business at over-croweded locations by opening new ones close by... I've always wondered how these came to be, and why they are still both open.
