Bank Of America To Close Some Branches & Transform Some Into Merrill Lynch Specialty Stores

Friday, February 11, 2011 - 2:35 PMBank of America - Details
From Bloomberg:
The company had 5,856 branches at the end of 2010, a 2.6 percent drop from the year earlier, and will “continue to downsize” its retail footprint, Chief Executive Officer Brian T. Moynihan told analysts last month.

As many as 10 percent of Bank of America branches eventually may become “specialty stores,” with a Merrill associate, a small-business adviser or mortgage expert, or video links to those representatives

In Boston, there are two full branches literally across the street from each other, right next to the Tremont and State intersection.  BofA isn't Starbucks, which intentionally cannibalizes its business at over-croweded locations by opening new ones close by... I've always wondered how these came to be, and why they are still both open.
