M&I Bank (Inactive)
(
5 stars)
My experience with this bank has been a very good one. M & I Bank - formally known as First Indiana Bank, does everything I believe a bank should do. The employees are always pleasant, friendly, and personable. They even remember most customers by name. I often have trouble remembering my account number, but as soon as I walk into the bank and get to the counter, they already have my information pulled up. Even when going to a branch other than my local branch, I have still never had a negative experience. Though it is a small chain, the employees treat all customers like VIP's. I once had a problem involving the type of checking account I had no longer being available. Because of this, they changed my account to a different type of checking, and I was never notified. Since it was a different type, it was no longer free, and they took a monthly checking fee from my account. I was not very happy about this, especially since I was never notified. I called the bank and spoke to the manager and he apologized continuously, worked with me to change my account to one that would be free, and refunded the money. He even gave me his name and number and told me to call him personally if I ever have a problem in the future. I also love that the bank has a machine that's sort of like a Coin Star - you put your change in, the machine counts it, and prints our a ticket that you take to the clerk and they give you cash for your change. This service is free for bank customers!

1. Monday, April 11, 2011 - 8:51 AMUnfortunately M&I, which has been in business since the 1800's, is now owned by Bank of Montreal. They will be using the name BMO Harris. Harris bank is the US based bank out of Chicago that was purchased by Bank of Montreal in the 80's.
This is all a result of M&I getting burned pretty bad by the financial crisis over the past couple years. M&I had substantial investments in Arizona and Florida... 2 of the hardest hit areas in the country. The customer service has been great, but I really don't feel good about the management. I'm seriously looking at an alternative. Currently they're pretty restrictive with the type of accounts you can have without receiving service fees. I'm not going to tolerate paying monthly fees or restrict my financial options because of their policies.

2. Friday, February 3, 2012 - 5:58 PMI moved my business to M&I a few years ago on the recommendation of a friend. The biggest selling point for me was no ATM fees. Everything was great until BMO took over last year.
In addition to being nicked and dimed to death, the customer service as been atrocious. We had a problem and scheduled an appointment with the branch manager. My wife showed up at the appointed time to find the manager wasn't there. We reschedued and thought we had the problem resolved, however, the refunds the manager promised never appeared and when we followed up, she denied ever making the offer.
I'm actively looking for another bank that values it's customers.
