I Love USAA

USAA Bank (5 stars)
I've never had an issue with them, and frankly, I'm shocked at all the difficulties people have had in the comments.  I'm in the Air Force and have been with USAA since 2006.  Their customer service is always prompt and polite, and I love that they pay dividends on everything, including car insurance and checking account (or there's interest or something - either way, you get money).  I also like the fact that you get ATM fees refunded.

I also find it amazing that everything is instant.  If I want to transfer money between accounts, I can do it on my phone and the money's there instantly.  Or if I deposit a check by sending them a picture, the funds are also in my account instantly.  Seriously, what other bank does that?  There's always some kind of hold with other banks.  USAA takes me at my word that the check is worth that much and that I'm good for it.  I have pretty much everything with them.

The only two downsides I can see is that they don't have a physical branch, so if I wanted to deposit cash, I wouldn't be able to.  I've never had to, so I'm not really worried about that.  Of course, there may actually be a way to do that, but I'm unaware of it.  The second one is that I've seen higher savings rates elsewhere.  I think also lower car insurancem but it wasn't by much, and I wouldn't trade it.

OK, here's another one for you.

I recently learned maturing CDs have an option of being transferred to a linked external account.  Two days before maturity I sent a bank mail to confirm everything was properly set up.  A CSR confirmed the transfer and mentioned funds could take (5) business days to clear.  I asked about a wire transfer alternative to reduce the delay and was instructed to phone the wire dept from 8-5, Mon-Fri., before 4 PM it would be sent the same day.

Contacting the wire department the next day at 9 AM, the maturity date, I realized the CSR’s information was erroneous.  Closed CDs could not be wired without a deposit account, something quite unexpected.  I suggested opening a savings account and wiring the balance.  Fifty minutes later I was told the ACH transfer was already “in process” and couldn’t be modified in any way.  The website still showed the previous month balance without final interest posted, a fact without bearing.

Every bank I know offers wire transfers of CDs in addition to mailing checks.  USAA’s EFT option is an exception, but disadvantageous under the circumstances.  In a ZIRP era of 5+ day ACH delays that used to execute overnight before taxpayer bank subsidies became the norm, this is another example of convoluted rules and misinformation used to the bank's benefit and the customer's detriment.

Warning:  Beware the USAA CD transfer trap.

In the interest of full disclosure, USAA warning that ACH transfers could take 5 business days was overly cautious. Funds posted in less than 24 hours.  My apologies.  It would seem the incidence of Post Traumatic Savers Dysorder (PTSD) is on the rise with no relief in sight "at least through mid-2013."
