Are Your Savings Bonds Safe? Concerns Of Treasury Direct's Security And Liability

Starting in January, you'll have to rely on Treasury Direct for new savings bonds except for buying paper savings bonds via your tax refund. There have been concerns that Treasury Direct doesn't offer sufficient protection against loss from theft. My Money Blog has a good review of this issue along with a long list of steps that a thief would have to take to drain your TD account. As you can see, the chance of theft is very small.
