NIGHTMARE Of Misinformation And Possibly Unethical Behavior

H&R Block Bank (1 stars)
My first time investing my Inherited Traditional IRA.  They offered 1.5% so I went with them, previously I had been with a MM with Vanguard.  They wouldn't let me take out the RMD before the CD expired.  I now learn that, by law, you have to be allowed to make the RMD without penalty, and there's a form involved.  NOBODY seemed to be aware of that.  They had to get my form where it was being transferred by a certain time or there was a huge time, forms weren't received, you name it.  I got my money, but this nonsense about the RMD is downright unethical.  How would you be able to make payments on a 5 year CD?  Stay far, far away from these guys and go with a strong, legit institution like Met Life or Ally.

I just learned on filing my Income Tax Return that a code of "1" was used on my 1099 from H&R Block Bank in reporting my RMD (Required Minimum Distribution).  The prior year, it was a "4" for Death (my father's).  Turns out they had never set up the IRA as an Inherited Traditional IRA and my father's name was nowhere on it.  The previous MM IRA with Vanguard was correct, and the new IRA with MetLife has his name.  So, there was a $500 "penalty" for "early distribution", which was only discovered as I looked very closely at the tax return.  I called the IRS, spent 1 hr. with them and got the correct form.  With this "paper trail" of before and after their ****up, they said I was fine and would never have to deal with H&R Block Bank again.  This is a SNAFU on their part of EPIC PROPORTIONS and God only knows what could've happened.  And the punchline?  Absolutely no one from H&R Block Bank ever got back to me, as concerned and scared as I was before the IRS helped me.  They are bad, bad news, have no right having contact with anyone's money.  Stick with Ally Bank, you can do a 5 year IRA the way you can do a 5 year CD and the penalty for closing is only 2 mos. interest, research it and read the CBS Moneywatch article online, you won't regret it.
