50 Years Of Government Spending, In 1 Graph

Wednesday, May 16, 2012 - 5:59 AM
I found this npr.org graph quite insightful.
Of each dollar the federal government spends, how much goes to defense? How much goes to Social Security? How much goes to interest on the debt? And how has this sort of thing changed over time?

The graphic below answers these questions. It shows the major components of federal spending 50 years ago, 25 years ago, and last year.

Very interesting graph.  Looking at latest figures, it truly shows what trouble economically our country is in.  With so many people unemployed, one can only expect Medicaid and the Safety Net Programs to be so much higher.  It's only going to get worse unless we can get leaders in Washington who will do their jobs and stop avoiding what has to be done to keep our society from going the way of Greece.  Last night on the political news politicians were warning that they expect revolution in the streets if control isn't taken soon and we don't do what has to be done to save our economy.   Those charts show just where we are heading and it is not comforting to see since Washington seems to want to leave the problems to the "next" leaders who take over.  They don't even have a budget!!
