The Washington Post reports
on the end of free checking for Wells Fargo customers in the D.C. area:
Wells Fargo informed Washington [D.C.] area customers last week of plans to institute a new checking account fee, wrapping up a year-long, cross-country roll out of the charge.
the bank is applying a monthly $5 maintenance fee to existing consumer checking accounts. Customers can avoid the fee by maintaining a balance of $1,500 or electronically depositing their paychecks or other “direct deposits” to the tune of at least $500 a month.
The Charlotte Observer had a similar article in May reporting on this change
for Carolina residents. Washington D.C., the Carolinas, Florida, Virginia and Maryland are affected by the final wave of Wells Fargo's roll out.
