CD = Certificate of Disappointment, Other Alternatives?

Dr. Don at Bankrate mentioned this other name for a CD in his answer to a reader's question about how to invest $25,000 for the short term and get higher yields than today's short-term CDs. The only other option Dr. Don mentioned was short-term bond funds. I'm surprised he didn't mention high-yield reward checking accounts which can work well with a $25,000 balance.
