I have a Citibank account, but I did not see my SSN on the envelope. Not too long ago, the Federal Income tax package and the state income tax package had my SSN printed right on the gummed stickers that were used for mailing. So the number was in plain view to see by anyone handling the mail. They removed it only recently only after the government all of a sudden became paranoid about privacy issues and identity theft.
