I have been chasing ThankYou points since the early 00's. They are no longer the screaming great deal they once were. Citi credit cards that promised 5 points per dollar on gas and groceries "forever", were eventually cut back to 1 point/$. The bonus for opening new bank accounts used to be as high as 40,000 points.
The other thing to be aware of is that the "value" of a point has been steadily declining. $100 gift cards for 10,000 points at just about any merchant you could name, used to be the norm. But no longer. Very few merchants participate any more, and instead of $100 for 10,000 points, you often end up with inferior deals like $50 for 6,000 points, or worse.
