Problem with 1099 from SmartyPig?

Bogleheads member describes a problem with SmartyPig issuing a wrong 1099. SmartyPig claimed it was WestBank's problem, and then WestBank blamed SmartyPig. This might not have happened if SmartyPig offered joint accounts. It's also a good lesson to make sure you review your 1099s.
