Safe Alternatives to Certificates of Deposit?

Dr. Don at Bankrate.com answers a question from one of his readers about CD alternatives for conservative investors. He presents a table that compares top CD rates with the current yields of Treasuries. CD rates may be low, but they're still much higher than Treasuries with comparable maturities. TIPS and I Bonds are another way to keep ahead of inflation which is the main risk with CDs. Unfortunately, I Bonds are not as good as they used to be.
