Some Birmingham grocery operators want banks to end the fee charged by banks for debit and credit card transactions. The fee is less than 1 percent per transaction, but with debit card use exploding, grocers say it's costing them big bucks.
Here's more backlash against interchange fees.

If the bank doesn't want to pay the fees, the answer is simple.  STOP ACCEPTNG DEBIT AND CREDIT CARDS.  Do all transactions by cash ONLY.
