What Do You Look For in a Bank or Credit Union? [Bargaineering]

Jim at Bargaineering writes that he wants a checking account from a "brick and mortar bank that is the cheapest option with the widest reach." Bank of America currently fits this need, but he's wanting to support his local credit unions. For those with the same thoughts, you don't have to give up the wide reach with many credit unions which belong to a shared branch network.
