1 Year IRA Rate Trend

1-Year IRA Rates

An IRA, or Individual Retirement Account, is an investment vehicle with tax rules and maximum contribution limits set by the Internal Revenue Service. The two main types of IRAs are a Roth IRA and a Traditional IRA, which have differing tax liabilities and benefits. Roth IRA rules essentially allow you to withdraw contributions and grow earnings tax-free, whereas Traditional IRA rules allow you to write contributions off to reduce your taxable income. IRA rates vary based on the underlying investments, which in the case of an IRA CD is a certificate of deposit.

Using the Rate Table

The 1-Year IRA CD, also called a 12 Month IRA, is offered with the highest interest rates by credit unions, followed by online banks. In our rate table above you can view membership requirements for the corresponding credit union by clicking the plus button to the left of the institution’s name. To view more detailed information about the bank or credit union (e.g., other products, rates, financial health, consumer reviews), simply click on the name.

The CD Component

The certificate of deposit part of the IRA CD serves as the instrument by which the account grows in earnings. The IRA component is the vehicle in which CD earnings live and grow. Some IRAs invest in stocks, some in bonds, and some in mutual funds among other things. IRA CDs are IRAs that invest in certificates of deposit, which make them time-restricted investments. When the CD within the IRA expires, however, you must move the proceeds into another IRA account, whether IRA CD or not, in order to avoid the tax implications. For this reason, IRA CDs also make sense when you need to roll over proceeds from another retirement account for a period of time to avoid being taxed before putting the funds into a longer-term investment vehicle.

SEP & Simple

Financial institutions usually offer a SEP IRA and a Simple IRA, as well, to provide retirement benefits geared towards small businesses. If you are switching employers or looking to accomplish a 401k rollover, both could be good options for you. All IRA CDs by law have early withdrawal penalties for removing funds before the date of maturity.
