More States Eligible for Frontier Bank’s Top Reward Checking Account
Frontier Bank (IA)

Last year when I first reported on the reward checking account at Frontier Bank, the online application allowed residents of three states to apply. Its online application now allows residents of 12 midwestern states to apply. This gives many more people access to a very competitive reward checking account. The reward checking is under the Kasasa brand, and it’s called Kasasa Cash. As of 3/18/2014, the account has a 3.05% APY on balances up to $20K if typical reward checking monthly requirements are met. There’s also a Kasasa Saver account...

Top 7-Year CD Rate for 11 States at MidFirst Direct - 2.75%
MidFirst Direct

Last month I reported on very competitive 3-, 4- and 5-year CD rates at MidFirst Direct, the internet division of MidFirst Bank. I learned last Saturday that MidFirst Direct is now offering 7-year CDs, and the rate is very competitive. Unfortunately, the rate has already fallen. It now has a 2.75% APY which is down from its original yield of 3.00%. Even with this lower rate, it’s still very competitive compared to other banks and credit unions. The 2.75% APY is listed in the MidFirst Direct CD page as of...

Top Long-Term CD Rates for 11 States at MidFirst Direct
MidFirst Direct

Last year I first learned about MidFirst Direct, the internet division of MidFirst Bank. At that time last year, it was offering some very competitive CD rates. Those didn’t last long. The rates fell a few days after my post. MidFirst Direct just recently raised its long-term CD rates, and they’re very competitive. Hopefully, these rates will hold longer than they did last year. These higher CD rates include:

  • 2.25% APY 5-year CD
  • 1.75% APY 4-year CD
  • 1.45% APY 3-year CD

The above rates are listed in the MidFirst Direct CD page as of...

Very Competitive Mid-Term CD Rates for 11 States at MidFirst Direct

Yesterday I learned about MidFirst Direct, the internet division of MidFirst Bank. It offers a money market account, checking account and CDs with maturities of 3 months to 60 months. Both the money market account and checking account have low rates, but I was pleasantly surprised to see some very competitive CD rates. Compared to other internet banks, the best two are a 1.35% APY 1-year CD and a 1.40% APY 18-month CD. Below is a list of all of the competitive CD rates as listed at the MidFirst Direct...

Update on the BankOn Online Savings Account and Bonus - CO, KS, MO, NE & WY Only
Pinnacle Bank (NE)

BankOn is one of the rare internet banks that's limited to only certain states. My first review of BankOn was in October 2009 when the savings account was paying 2.05%. The yield held up well until last September when it fell to 1.15% APY where it remains as of 2/25/2011. This yield still is disappointing, but it's getting more competitive as others cut rates.

One nice small perk with BankOn that's still around is a sign-up bonus of $25 when you open the savings account. There doesn't seem to be any...

Top High-Yield Online Savings Account at BankOn - CO, KS, MO, NE & WY Only

With the news that Alliant Credit Union will be lowering its savings account yield from 1.50% to 1.35% in September, more people may be interested in BankOn. I first reported on BankOn in October 2009. Since then it has maintained a very competitive rate on its Money Market Savings Account. It's currently 1.60% APY as of 8/25/2010, and this rate has been maintained since April.

Unfortunately, BankOn isn't available nationwide. It's one of the rare internet accounts that is limited to only certain states: Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Wyoming.

Another downside...

Update 5/12/2011: This Bank of the West promotion has ended. The latest iPod touch promotion is being offered by KeyBank. Please refer to this iPod touch bonus post for more details.

Bank of the West just came out with another checking account promotion. I just posted on their $100 checking account bonus on Sunday. They're now offering a free Apple iPod touch when you open one of their checking accounts, and complete a few requirements. Here's the promotions page (now inactive). It's also listed on the bank's front...

13-Month & 37-Month CD Specials at UniWyo FCU in Wyoming - 1.41%
UniWyo Federal Credit Union

UniWyo Federal Credit Union is offering two competitive CD specials: 2.01% APY 13-month CD and 2.62% APY 37-month CD. Minimum deposit is only $250. These rates are listed at the credit union's rates page as of 5/16/2010.

Above the rate table it states the following:

I'm not sure what they mean by "rates may change after the account is opened". They don't appear to be variable-rate CDs.

The credit union also offers a high-yield reward checking account that pays 4.21% APY on balances up to $25K as of 5/16/2010 (see account review).

High-Yield Online Savings Account and Sign-up Bonus at BankOn for NE, CO, KS, MO & WY Only

Update 9/14/10: The rate has fallen to 1.15% APY. The bonus is now $25.

Pinnacle Bank of Nebraska has launched an internet bank called BankOn. The internet bank has a no-minimum online savings account with a 2.05% APY as of 10/12/09. Unfortunately, it's not a nationwide deal. When you select the Apply Now button, the first page of the application states that they are only accepting online applications from Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Wyoming residents. It looks like a good deal for residents of those states.

You are required to open...
