DA readers are probably familiar with most of the different types of American First CU Certificates, but the Dedicated Savings Certificate is just a proprietary name for an Add-On CD. I first wrote about the Dedicated Savings Certificate in a May 2012 blog post, and the most salient features have not changed since then:

  • Additional contributions up to $10k per month.
  • Each member limited to deposits of $100k in any one or combination of Dedicated Savings ac-counts.
  • Automatic share transfer or payroll deduction (must be at least $10 per month).

A summary of rates, fees and details, including the Early Withdrawal Penalty, associated with America First CU's various Certificates is available on the Credit Union's website.

Certificate accounts that are new or renewed on or after June 1, 2011:
Terms of twelve (12) months or less–sixty (60) days of dividend;
terms over twelve (12) months–one hundred eighty (180) days of dividend.

Many thanks to DA reader, cumulus, for his Forum post about American First CU.

had an dedicated savings (add-on CD) with them before.  A class act.  never had an issue with them.  They have a great heloc as well,  numerous choices.  one with the rate fixed, on the credit line,  for the first 5 years.  easy to work with, friendly folks at the call center.  for a 5 year cert u can open with $0 and just have to do a minimum of $10 transfer/mo.  Good safety net account that can hold on to with minimal deposit and if rates drop over the next couple of years can then add on up to 10,000 per month until maxing out at 100,000.  just be sure to choose the dividend to another account that way if you decide to max it out at 100,000 you will still get interest each month on the full 100,000
