Bank Overview

Astoria Bank, (FDIC Charter # 29805) has an overall health grade of "B+" at DepositAccounts.com, with a Texas ratio of 8.48% (excellent) based on March 31, 2016 data. Astoria Bank has an excellent capitalization level of 12.85%, the result of holding $14.91 billion in assets, with $1.92 billion in equity. Please refer to our financial overview of Astoria Bank for more details.

Established in 1888 as the Astoria Federal Savings and Loan Association, today’s Astoria Bank has provided over 125 years of continuous service to residents of the New York City metropolitan area. The last 35 years have seen the acquisition of five savings and loan associations and three banks, resulting in the 9th largest bank in New York State.

How Astoria Bank's Simple+ and Select Checking Account Bonus Compares

What makes this $250 bonus unique is that it can be earned by making online bill payments, without having to fulfill a direct deposit requirement, but the balance requirements do offset the value of the bonus.

Simple+ Checking

The balance requirement ($2.5K for the minimum required four months) would yield approximately $8.33 in four months in a savings account earning 1.00% APY. Should the balance fall below $2.5K, a $10 monthly service fee would apply and the bonus offer becomes void.

Select Checking

The balance requirement ($25K for the minimum required four months) would yield approximately $83.06 in four months in a savings account earning 1.00% APY. Should the balance fall below $5K, a $15 monthly service fee would apply and the bonus offer becomes void.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN THIS ACCOUNT.  Firstly, the bank will email you seeking to verify small amounts deposited to the bank with which you are seeking to fund theirs.  The email contains a link that does not take you to the proper webpage.  Secondly, when you do get to the proper web page, the interface does not work properly and the amounts will never be correctly validated.  Thirdly, after spending umpteen hours on the phone you will get terrible customer service that does not provide correct answers and suggests you to try to open a new account.  Finally, after repeating the above including some extra quality time with customer service and a promise that your account is opened, you will receive a letter stating that they have made a "business decision not to establish an account relationship with you at this time" which the fine customer service people will not explain.
Avoid Astoria bank at all costs.  Sure a $250 bonus sounds like a nice enticement to start an account, but unless you are going into a brick and mortar branch, you will never see it.  Save yourself the trouble and choose a more reliable bonus; then take up a hobby with the time you have saved.

I had no problem setting up the account.  My problem came later when I wanted to add additional funds to the account.  Apparently, you can set up a “pull” to initially fund the account but only once. All subsequent deposits must be mobile checks (after 30 day probation), go to branch, do direct deposit or push from another account.
