Bent River Community Credit Union was established in 1935 as the Davenport Bell Credit Union. For nearly 60 years, the Credit Union remained a financial institution for telephone company employees in the Davenport district. A merger with Southeast Iowa Catholic Credit Union in 1993 led to an expansion in the field of membership and a new name, the Communications and Catholic Credit Union. A further merger with GPC Credit Union in 2008 allowed for further expansion. In 2001, a change to a community charter resulted in the current name, Bent River Community Credit Union.
In my seemingly endless supply of “collateral information” gathered as I research financial institutions, I discovered an interesting fact about the name, Bent River. The Quad Cities are located at the confluence of the Rock and Mississippi Rivers, and while the Mississippi River does bend as it snakes it way down to the Gulf of Mexico, the Quad Cities area is unique, as the Mississippi flows from east to west as it travels through the area.
