Competitive 3-Year CD Rate at Bronco FCU in VA - Local Only

Bronco Federal Credit Union is offering a few competitive CD rates. The most competitive include a 2.75% APY 36-month CD, a 2.00% APY 24-month CD and a 1.61% APY 12-month CD. Minimum deposit is $1,000. These rates are listed at the credit union's share certificates rates page as of 5/11/2010.

A 2.75% APY may seem low for a 3-year term, but I'm afraid it's very competitive. It's near the top of what's available nationwide in the 3-year CD rates table at DepositAccounts.com.

One nice website feature is the online chat service. I used it today and confirmed the rates listed are up-to-date. According to the CSR, the early withdrawal penalty of all CDs is 91 days of interest which is better than average for terms over 1 year. The same CD rates are also available in an IRA.

It has been a while since my last post on Bronco FCU. It was back in January 2009 when Bronco was offering a 3.90% 15-month CD special.

Membership is open to those who live, work, worship, or attend school in the Virginia counties Isle of Wight and Southampton, and the cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Suffolk and Virginia Beach. Please refer to their membership page for more details.

Branches are located in Franklin, Suffolk and Emporia, Virginia.

The credit union's ratings for soundness are a little weak: 2 stars (problematic) at BauerFinancial, 1 star (lowest) at Bankrate.com, and 2 out of 5 overall health score at DepositAccounts.com (see our Bronco FCU rates and reviews page). Ratings are based on 12/31/09 financial data. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 4616).

Bronco Federal Credit Union is offering a 3.90% APY 15-month Bump Share Certificate. Minimum deposit is $1,000. It allows the rate to be bumped up during the term to the current 12-month certificate rate. This is also available in an IRA. This rate is listed at the credit union's rate table as of 1/08/09.

My last report on this credit union was in November 2007 when they were offering a special 5.25% 13-month Bump CD

Bronco Federal Credit Union is offering some competitive certificate rates. There's a special 13-month Bump certificate with a yield of 5.25% APY. The standard 60-month share certificate also has a competitive yield of 5.44% APY. The 24-month and 36-month CD yields are not bad either with yields of 5.10% and 5.20% APY. The minimum deposit is $1,000.

My last report on this credit union was in July when they were offering a special 6.14% 9-month CD.

Bronco FCU is offering a special 6.14% APY 9-month certificate. The minimum deposit is $100. A new checking account is required. It's scheduled to last until 8/17/07. This special isn't listed on the credit union's website. A reader emailed me info on this, and I contacted the credit union for further info via its online chat service. They do have a free checking account with no minimum balance or monthly fees.

Bronco Federal Credit Union is offering a 5.75% APY share certificate with terms from 12 months to 60 months. The minimum deposit is $1,000. Since the effective date listed on the rate table was 11/28/06 I called to confirmed and was told these rates are still available. All the CDs have a 91 day interest early withdrawal penalty. These same rates are also available in an IRA CD (either Roth, Traditional or Education).

Bronco Federal Credit Union (BFCU) has a special 6% APY 6-month share certificate with a no penalty feature. There's a $10K minimum deposit. You must have a BFCU checking account with direct deposit.

The credit union's field of membership includes residents of the Virginia counties of Greensville and Sussex and the North Carolina counties of Hertford, Halifax and Northampton.

BFCU has branches in the Virginia cities of Franklin and Emporia which are located near the border of North Carolina.

BFCU is NCUA insured with $135 million in assets and 13,000 members.
