Coastal Community and Teachers Credit Union (CCATCU) recently added a 12-month CD Special to its product line. Earning a competitive 2.27% APY, the 12-month CD Special requires a minimum $5k opening deposit.
I’ve had a run of bad luck lately determining Early Withdrawal Penalties (EWP) – either the CSRs don’t have the information or I’m given a ludicrous answer. (My favorite so far is, “I can’t tell you, because it changes every day.”) When I easily found the Truth-in-Savings disclosure on CCATCU’s website, I thought I was home free.
Then I read it.
Amount of Penalty. For Certificate accounts, the amount of early withdrawal
penalty for your account is 50% of the remaining days left and the original amount.
Actually, I read it several times. After not gaining any insight, I called CCATCU, twice. Neither CSR I spoke with could clarify the meaning of “50% of the remaining days left and the original amount.” Both suggested that I speak with a Financial Specialist, but my calls went to voice mail. I wasn’t able to call a branch directly, because the phone numbers listed for all the branches goes to a call center.
If you are interested in opening this CD Special, you should get clarification on the EWP from a CCATCU Financial Specialist. And please let me know what you find out.
