Coastal Community & Teachers CU (TX) Has 2 Reward Checking Accounts


Availability: Residents of Aransas, Duval, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Nueces, and San Patricio Counties, Texas.

Coastal Community and Teachers Credit Union (CCATCU) offers two Rewards Checking Accounts - REAL Checking and Bonu$ Checking, both of which earn 3.56% APY on qualifying balances up to $10k. Qualifying balances over $10k earn 0.50% APY, with non-qualifying balances earn 0.10% APY.

The only difference between the two accounts is that the REAL Checking account has a companion REAL Savings account that earns 0.75% APY on all balances.

The Bonu$ Checking is the older of the two, having been added to the product line in November 2010. Its initial rate of 4.33% (up to $10k) lasted for about ten months before dropping to 3.82% APY. The current 3.56% APY has been in effect since November 2013. The REAL Checking and REAL Savings accounts were introduced in May 2014, and their initial rates are still in effect.

REAL Checking/Bonu$ Checking Qualifying Requirements

  • Have at least 10 debit card purchases.
  • Have at least 1 Direct Deposit or ACH
  • Be enrolled and log into Online Banking.
  • Be enrolled and receive eStatements.

The REAL Checking and Bonu$ Checking accounts have no minimum balance requirements or monthly service fees. Both accounts require a minimum opening deposit of $50. A maximum of $25 in nationwide ATM fees will be reimbursed automatically if incurred during a qualified cycle, up to $4.99 per single transaction. ATM receipt must be presented for reimbursement of an individual ATM fee of $5.00 or higher.


Headquartered in Corpus Christi, Coastal Community and Teachers Credit Union is primarily a residency-based credit union, offering membership to individuals who live or work in the Texas Gulf Coast counties of Aransas, Duval, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Nueces, and San Patricio.

Immediate family members (defined as spouse, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, grandchild, stepparent, stepchild, stepsibling and adoptive relationships) of current CCATCU membership are also eligible to join.

Joining CCATCU and or opening a REAL Checking or Bonu$ Checking account must be done in person at any of eight Texas branches, located in Alice, Corpus Christi (4), Freer, Kingsville, and Portland. CCATCU’s Membership Application is available for download to facilitate the application process.

Both the REAL Checking and Bonu$ Checking accounts have "Apply Now" buttons, but the fine print states,

Coastal Community and Teachers Credit Union is offering a high-yield reward checking account called Bonus Checking. It's another example of a low balance cap. However, the high rate helps offset this a bit. The account has the following rates and features if certain requirements are met (as of 11/23/2010):
