$150 Checking Account Bonus at Horizon Bank in Parts of IN & MI

Update 5/6/2012: The promotion has been extended. It's now scheduled to end on 6/30/2012.

Some community banks have extended their promotions to attract customers participating in the Bank Transfer Day movement. That appears to be the case at Horizon Bank which is still offering a $150 checking account promotion. The bonus requires that you open a new checking account, establish direct deposit and make 10 debit card purchases. The bank's free checking qualifies. Details are provided in the bank's checking account page. The account must be opened by 10/31/2011 6/30/2012. Here's the offer's small print:

$150 will be deposited into your checking account within 30 days of verifying the direct deposit and 10 point of sale debit card transactions (purchases with your debit card) are confirmed. Both activities must occur within the first 60 days from the account open date. Subject to 1099 reporting. Limit one account per household for the bonus.

The bank's free checking account is the best deal unless you're 55 or older. In that case, the 55+ Checking is better since it has extra perks like free checks and no monthly fees. The bank belongs to the MoneyPass ATM network that gives customers access to 1000's of surcharge-free ATMs.

A branch visit is required to open an account. Horizon Bank branches are located in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan. Some of the Indiana cities include Elkhart, Michigan City, South Bend and Valparaiso. Some of the Michigan cities include Saint Joseph and New Buffalo.

The bank has an overall health score at DepositAccounts.com of 4 stars (out of 5) with a Texas Ratio of 12.82% (above average) based on June 2011 data. Please refer to our financial overview of Horizon Bank for more detail. The bank has been a FDIC member since 1934 (FDIC Certificate # 4360).
