Mountain America CU Offers Top Rate 5-Year CD

Earlier this week, Mountain America Credit Union (MACU) raised the rate on its 5-year Term Deposit (2.30% APY). The minimum deposit is $500, with no maximum balance cap.

In the past 18 months, the 5-year Term Deposit (CD) has had 8 rates changes, fluctuating between 1.90% APY (February 2014) and today’s 2.30% APY.

The 5-year CD is also being offered as an IRA (Traditional and Roth) at the same APY and with the same funding requirements.

As stated in MACU’s Membership Agreement, the Early Withdrawal Penalty reads as follows:

For term deposit accounts that are new or renewed on or after August 1, 2014:

If your term deposit has an original maturity of 48 months or greater, the penalty may equal 365 days dividends on the full amount of the term deposit.

Mountain Climber Term Deposit

MACU has a unique variation of the 5-year CD for investors 27 years and younger: the 60-month Mountain Climber Term Deposit (CD). While earning the same 2.30% APY, the minimum opening deposit for the 60-month Mountain Climber CD is only $25. Mountain Climber CDs permit additional deposits throughout the CD's term, up to $3K per calendar year.

Headquartered in West Jordan, Utah, Mountain America Credit Union's membership eligibility is based on residency, family relationships, or a relationship with an SEG or Affiliated Association:

Easy Membership: As one of MACU’s Affiliated Associations, the American Credit Council can be joined by anyone with a $5 membership fee;

Residency: Salt Lake County, Suchesne County, Wasatch County (census tract 940300), or Unitah County (census tract 940100 or 940200);

Relationship: Family member of an existing member;

Affiliation: Employee or volunteer of a MACU SEG or Affiliated Association.

Joining Mountain American Credit Union and/or opening a CD can be done online, or at any of 78 branches located in Arizona (2), Idaho (7), New Mexico (2), Nevada (4) and Utah (63).

Mountain America Credit Union (MACU) has just recently come out with a special 5-year CD rate that’s very competitive. It has a 2.20% APY with a $500 minimum deposit. MACU calls these Term Deposits, and they’re available in IRAs. This special term deposit is listed in MACU’s promotions page as of 3/3/2014. According to this page, this is a limited time special. After other credit unions have cut their CD rates, Mountain America Credit Union (MACU) now has the best 5-year CD and IRA CD rate as compared to other major credit unions. Mountain America calls these Term Deposits. The 5-year Term Deposit has a 2.00% APY. Minimum deposit is $500. This rate is listed at MACU's rates page as of 2/12/2013. Rates are subject to change at anytime.

Competitive 5-Year CD Rate at Mountain American Credit Union in UT, NV, NM & AZ

Mountain America Credit Union (MACU) has a competitive 5-year CD and IRA CD rate. MACU calls these Term Deposits. The 5-year Term Deposit has a 2.00% APY. Minimum deposit is $500. This rate is listed at MACU's rates page as of 6/11/2012. The rates for the shorter terms are much less competitive.

I can't find an account disclosure online. When I last contacted the credit union in 2010, I was told that the "penalty for early withdrawal on a 5 year term deposit is 180 days worth of interest."

$100 Checking Account Bonus at Mountain America Credit Union in UT, AZ, NV & NM
