Union State Bank has a long history of offering a competitive reward checking account. I first reported on its reward checking account in 2008 when the top yield was 6.01% for balances up to $25K. The rate has gone down, but the balance cap has remained the same. The bank also now offers a companion savings account called REAL Saver. Below is a summary of the rates and requirements of these accounts as listed in the bank’s My Rewards Checking page as of 8/21/2013:

My Rewards Checking rates and ATM fee refunds if monthly requirements are met:

  • 2.50% APY on balances up to $25,000
  • 0.50% APY on portion of balance over $25,000
  • 0.05% APY if requirements are not met
  • ATM fee refunds up to $25 per monthly qualification cycle

REAL Saver rates if monthly requirements are met:

  • 1.25% APY on balances up to $25,000
  • 0.50% APY on portion of balance over $25,000
  • 0.05% APY if requirements are not met

Monthly requirements to receive the above rates:

  • 10 debit card purchases
  • 1 direct deposit or ACH auto debit
  • Access online banking
  • Receive e-statements

Both accounts are free with no monthly service fees and no minimum balance requirement. The minimum deposit to open the accounts is $25.

According to the bank’s FAQs, they allow up to two My Rewards Checking accounts per customer.

High-Yield Reward Checking Account at a Kansas Bank (Union State)

Update 4/08/10: The top rate has fallen to 3.25% APY.

Union State Bank has a rewards checking account that pays 3.25% APY on balances up to $25,000 (1.00% for above) and refunds ATM fees if the following monthly requirements are met:

  • 10 debit card purchases
  • one direct deposit or ACH debit
  • access online banking
  • receive e-statements

If these are not met, the rate falls to 0.30%. The minimum initial deposit is $25. There are no monthly service fees.
