I have written about many Rewards Checking Accounts (RCA), but I think this is the first time I’ve written about two competitive RCAs being offered by the same financial institution.
Vista Bank offers VistaSmart Checking (3.51% APY on qualifying balances up to $30k) and Vista Checking (2.51% APY on qualifying balances up to $30k). Both RCAs earn 0.50% on qualifying balances over $30k and 0.05% APY on non-qualifying balances.
The VistaSmart Checking account requires a $100 minimum opening deposit, and there is a $4.99 monthly fee if the qualifying requirements are not met. Nationwide and foreign ATM fees will be reimbursed up to $25, if the qualifying requirements are met. As you would expect, the higher APY RCA comes with a more demanding set of requirements.
VistaSmart Checking Qualification Requirements
- At least 30 debit card purchases.
- At least two Direct Deposits or ACHs.
- Receive eStatements.
When I first wrote about the VistaSmart Checking in 2010, the Vista Checking account didn’t exist. The Vista Checking account is fee-free, but does require a $100 minimum opening deposit. Nationwide ATM fees will be reimbursed up to $25, if the qualifying requirements are met.
Vista Checking Qualification Requirements
- At least 15 debit card purchases.
- At least one Direct Deposit or ACH.
- Receive eStatements.

a capitalization of $11,000. It was an unincorporated private bank.
And so began the journey of Vista Bank. Vista Bank’s Who We Are details the Bank’s 104-year history. Vista Bank is one of the very few 100-year old Texas banks still being operated by the founding family.
How the VistaSmart Checking Compares
Out of the 45 High Yield Reward Checking Accounts (RCA) tracked by DepositAccounts.com, which are available to residents in the Lubbock, Texas area, only six have maximum qualifying balances of at least $30k. When compared to those six RCAs , Vista Bank’s VistaSmart Checking APY clearly ranks first.
The above rates are accurate as of 8/10/2016.
