CNET Reports on EmigrantDirect's Glitches, WAMU Also Had Glitches


Two days of website outages at EmigrantDirect got the attention of CNET. This CNET article describes the problems EmigrantDirect customers are experiencing. It doesn't add anything that we didn't already know. CNET was unable to speak with any Emigrant spokesperson. It's still unclear if it was just too much traffic or some other issue.

Emigrant wasn't alone. The article also reports on system glitches at Washington Mutual's website. Some WAMU customers were unable to transfer money or pay bills from their online accounts. According to a WAMU spokesman, the problem wasn't widespread. The cause didn't seem to be known. Unlike Emigrant's problems, WAMU's problems wasn't associated with a site upgrade.

One thing to learn from these problems is to make sure you give yourself some leeway when you pay your bills or transfer money. You can't assume that you'll always be able to access your account without delay. Also, as the article mentions, it doesn't help build confidence in online banking. However, there hasn't been any fraud or lost money, so it shouldn't cause too much concern.

I can't even access the site cause they changed the user name limit to 15 characters. My username is 16 characters!

I keep trying to call to talk to customer service but can't get through. There always is a busy signal which is very weird. I think they didn't plan their web page transition very well.

Anyone know when Wash. Mutual bill pay will be back? It has been down at least a day! I need to pay bills!

WAMU bill pay is still down as of 4:55pm Pacific. no clue when it will be back up. i think it has been 2 days now. frustrating.

Log in to EmigrantDirect web site last night. Was able to establist new password and five questions needed to access my account. It appears nothing else has changed. My ACH information is the same as before.

Had no problem with their new system.

I've never seen such a breathtaking level of technical incompetency as with WAMU Bill Pay Online. This thing has been down almost a whole workweek now. Hopefully the idiotic IT VP will get his nuts chopped off!!!!!

They couldn't reset my password... after about 2 weeks of getting spurious error messages whenever I tried to enter a new password I got steamed enough that a supervisor -deleted- my online account, saying that there was no other way to update a password.

I recreated my account, things looked OK, but none of my recurring payments were going through. At least I don't think they are, my landlord says they got a check that doen't show up on my transaction history.

I haven't been able to access my account to send a check for, oh, about 2 weeks now.

Obviously time to change banks, I've never seen such nonsense in a mom 'n pop web site, to say nothing of a commercial bank.

I tried to open an account with them 11 days ago, and still couldn't establish the account at the site. I am getting either time out or error messages. Can't get hold of them via phone or email either. I have never seen services as horrible as this.

I tried to set up my business account (which I established at a branch) online, and it never happened. After waiting five days, I called customer service, and they said it takes up to a week. After another 10 days, I finally had them set it up via telephone. Now with the bill pay problem, I'm seriously thinking of switching to Bank of America.

I've been banking online since 1999 (I lived in Canada, where their banking system is light years ahead of the U.S.). I have NEVER seen a mess like this online bill pay glitch. No warning to customers, no idea of when it will be solved... Unbelievable.

Is it down again? I just signed up for an account 3 days ago, and I have not been able to access their Bill Pay once yet. I keep getting the error message that says "Our system is temporarily unavilable. please try again later."

What's up with that? Anyone else having this problem?
