3.40% 12-Month CD & 4.25% 48-Month CD at Alliant Credit Union - Easy Membership

Update 2/21/09: The CD rates have fallen. Please check the credit union's website for the latest rates.

Alliant Credit Union's CD rates have fallen since my January post, but they remain very competitive. The rates include a 3.40% APY 12-month CD, a 3.55% APY 24-month CD, a 4.00% APY 36-month CD and a 4.25% APY 48-month CD. Minimum deposit is $25,000. Rates are 15 basis points lower for a $1,000 minimum deposit. They are also available as IRA certificates. These rates are listed in the credit union's rate table as of 2/09/2009. Unlike the savings account rates, certificate rates have changed before the start of the month, so these may not last much longer. For more details about applying for these CDs, refer to my previous Alliant post.

Other competitive deposit products at Alliant Credit Union include:
  • 3.00% APY savings account, rate good through February (account review)
  • 3.00% APY checking account (account review)
  • 4.00% APY Health Savings Account (HSA)
Credit union membership is open to local and national PTA members. There's a $25 membership fee for the National PTA, and it appears to be open to all. Membership in your local PTA may be a lower cost option. Please see the credit union's members eligibility page for more details.

One downside regarding membership is that several readers have reported a hard credit inquiry by Equifax in the application.

Alliant's customer service has impressed many readers. Reports indicate they answer their phones and emails promptly with helpful information. They have 24/7 live phone assistance.

Branches are located in Chicago, Des Plaines, and Elk Grove Township, Illinois. There are also branches in Colorado, California and Virginia.

Alliant Credit Union has some fair to strong ratings for soundness: 5 stars (superior) at BauerFinancial and 3 stars (performing) at Both are based on 9/30/08 data. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 67955).

Alliant is competitive, not as good as they used to be, but still better than a sharp stick in the eye. I still have my CD at 5.4%. My wife's CD matures in April, so I'll probably just bite the bullet and roll it over into another 1 year. Can't fathom the pain of switching for a few basis points.

We'll see how competitive Alliant Credit Union is after we see if they lower their Savings Account and Checking Account interest rates below 3% after this month.

Even lower still, Checking is at 2.25% and saving 2.5%. I just opened the account and it just keeps dropping. Well, I guess everything is down right now. I hope it heads in the other direction sometime soon.
