Survey of the Best CD Rates for November 8, 2013

Survey of the Best CD Rates for November 8, 2013

Today’s employment report was better than expected, and that pushed up Treasury yields for a big gain. With good economic news like this, the Fed is more likely to begin tapering in December. That should hopefully keep the pressure on banks to raise their long-term CD rates.

There weren’t many CD rate changes this week in my list of top nationwide CDs. The most noteworthy CD rate change this week was at CIT Bank. It joined the 2% club with an increase on its 5-year Jumbo CD rate. With a 2.05% APY, it’s now tied with State Bank of India - New York as the bank with the highest 5-year CD rate that’s nationally available.

Xceed Financial Credit Union added another CD special. Last week I reported on its 1% APY 7-month CD. I just noticed today that it now has a 19-month CD special with a 1.25% APY. Xceed is an all-access credit union that makes it easy for anyone to join via an association.

One of the top deals at an all-access credit union continues to be the 3-year CD at PenFed. This has a 2.02% APY and an early withdrawal penalty of only up to 180 days of interest. I have more details about PenFed and its CDs in my PenFed CD review. Many readers have also shared their experiences with PenFed CDs in the comments of that review.

Local CD Deals

Just like the nationwide CDs, there weren’t many rate changes in the local ones.

I just added two deals to the local CDs. One actually isn’t a CD. It’s the latest savings account promotion at Capital One Bank. It’s guaranteeing a 1% APY for 1 year when customers open its Smart Savings Account. However, this special is only available in Capital One’s market area which includes Washington DC, Maryland, Northern Virginia, New Jersey, New York and Texas. I’m including this in the CD list due to the 1-year rate guarantee.

The other local deal is the 19-month CD special at Money One Federal Credit Union. This has a 1.90% APY with a maximum deposit of $99,000. I used to consider Money One as an all-access credit union, but it appears they’re now requiring new members to reside in either DC, Maryland or Virginia.

Long-Term CD Break Strategy

For the short-term CDs in my lists, you might notice CDs with the note "5-year CD closed after X years". These take into account the yield after the early withdrawal penalty is applied. Since Ally Bank's 5-year CD only has a 60-day interest penalty (until 12/7/2013), it's still a good deal when closed early even with the recent rate cuts (Note, this is scheduled to change on new CDs on 12/7/13. See post.)

If you want to compare the effective yields of other CDs after the early withdrawal penalties, please refer to our CD early withdrawal penalty calculator.

The risks of planning for early withdrawals of long-term CDs were recently highlighted by the deposit agreement change at Ally. The risks have also been seen at credit unions which have raised the early withdrawal penalties on existing CDs. I have more details in this blog post.

Note About the CD Survey

As I described in my rate table overview, you can use our CD rate tables to find the best rates for both nationally available CDs and local CDs. This CD survey blog posts are intended to highlight nationwide CD deals that may not be apparent in the tables. For example, I'll include the post-penalty yields of a few long-term CDs.

The CD survey blog posts are also intended to highlight the local CD deals that are available in large metro areas. There are many high CD rates, but most of these are at small banks in rural areas or at small credit unions with very narrow fields of membership. In these local CD surveys, my focus is on local CD deals that are in big cities or that are available in large areas of a state.

When Will Fed Unwind the Taper?

Anonymous   |     |   Comment #2
To unwind the taper? To unwind the taper would mean to buy more bonds not less..... to taper the bond buying is to buy less bonds.   It should read.... when will the fed taper their bond buying....they haven't even tapered yet how are they going to unwind the taper?

Excellent article Shorebreak. Rates have continued low since my CDs matured, and the more I look at the investment landscape, the more it looks like the guessing, speculating and gambling the article talks about. Even brokered CDs have a shock aspect, like yesterday when the secondary market value of brokered CDs dropped substantially. At the same time, yesterday on TV, a reporter explained the huge and often hidden commisions charged to retail investors. In one case mentioned, institutional investors made over 10% profit whereas individual investors lost over 10% on the same investment, due to the different commisions. I don't know about you but I sure feel like a sitting duck in this investing environment. Cheers.
Anonymous   |     |   Comment #4
Use somebody that has low expenses such as Vanguard, they will tell you exactly how much the commission is.

When you buy a brokered cd, plan on holding it to maturity and don't look at the price swings... just know you will get all your money back at the end of the term.  The one thing I don't like about brokered cds is no compounding and over say a 7 or 10 year time period it adds up.

I noticed that Nationwide Bank's website is now showing--for 12-month CDs--a 1.06% APY for $10k to $99k balances.  The $100k rate is 1.01% APY.  This may be a mistake in its rates table, which is as of this coming Monday.
OldGuy   |     |   Comment #6
The error in the 12-month CD rate was corrected by Nationwide this morning.
