Banking in the Columbus Area
Columbus is the largest city in and the county seat of Lowndes County, Mississippi, with a population of 23,452, as of the 2010 Census. Columbus makes up a region of east central Mississippi called the Golden Triangle along with Starkville in Oktibbeha County where Mississippi State University is located. It also includes West Point, the county seat of the adjacent Clay County. Other cities in the region include Tupelo, Pontotoc, Booneville, Amory, Louisville, New Albany, and Aberdeen.
Columbus hosts Columbus Air Force Base, which is currently the city's largest employer. Columbus hosted many industries in the past including the one-time largest toilet seat manufacturer, Sanderson Plumbing Products. It also hosted a mattress company, furniture, and textile plants. Most of these industries shut down by 2000.
Columbus isn't really known for its banking industry, but it does have a locally owned bank, Bancorp South, that was established in 1876 and has two branches in the City. Twenty banks and 13 credit unions are headquartered in the city, including Triangle Federal Credit Union. Other banks include Renasant Bank, BankFirst Financial Services, Community Bank, North Mississippi Bank, and BNA Bank. The number of bank branches in the region totals approximately 210 from more than 35 banks and 20 credit unions.
