Banking in the Dothan Area
Located in the southeastern corner of Alabama, Dothan is only about 16 miles north of the Florida state line and 20 miles west of Georgia. An important commercial and transportation focal point for the area, Dothan is known as a major peanut processing center. With its strategic location, low property taxes and diverse economy, this pro-business metropolitan area is the site of several notable financial institutions.
Fifteen banks and three credit unions are headquartered in the Dothan area. The Army Aviation Center Federal Credit Union (AACFCU) was chartered in the 1960s to serve the financial needs of troops and their families stationed at nearby Fort Rucker. The member-owned financial institution now has more than 113,000 members globally and over 20 area-wide branches.
The area's oldest active bank, First State Bank of Blakely, is headquartered in nearby southwestern Georgia. Chartered in 1903, First State Bank now offers its customers a large range of online services through its NetTeller program. Also serving the area for over a century, MidSouth Bank is headquartered in Dothan. The bank was founded to serve the needs of local residents and businesses and continues to focus on its close relationship with its customers. Another financial institution that stresses its personal attention to its customers is Five Star Credit Union. Five Star Credit Union was originally chartered in Cedar Spring, Georgia, to serve the financial needs of employees of the Great Southern Paper Company, now known as Georgia-Pacific. Five Star relocated its headquarters to Dothan in 1997.
