Banking in the Fargo Area
Fargo is the largest city in North Dakota and has a metropolitan area that includes both North Dakota and Minnesota. Though the city of Fargo itself only has about 115,000 people, the larger metropolitan area, including West Fargo in North Dakota and Moorhead in Minnesota, is about twice that size.
Because of its role as the largest city in North Dakota, as well as the largest city in a fairly large area covering North and South Dakota as well as western Minnesota, Fargo is a major economic center, and one of its major industries is banking.
There are 79 banks and 31 credit unions with headquarters in the Fargo metro area. Altogether, more than 100 banks and 40 credit unions have operations in the area, with a total of about 530 branches. Major banks with their headquarters in the Fargo area include Bell State Bank & Trust, Gate City Bank, Alerus Financial, Choice Financial, and CornerStone Bank. The oldest bank still operating is The Goose River Bank, which was established in 1881.
