Flint, Michigan, is a city of about 100,000 people in Genesee County, about an hour northwest of Detroit. It is the seventh-largest city in Michigan but has the fourth-largest metropolitan area, with a population of 425,000. Other important cities in the region include Saginaw, Bay City, Midland, Mount Pleasant, Fenton, Grand Blanc, Owosso, Burton and Alma.
General Motors got its start in Flint in 1908, and the city was once one of the most important automotive manufacturing centers in the world. By 1960, Flint's city population had reached almost 200,000 people. However, in the latter part of the 20th century, the city fell on hard times, and half the population has since left.

Altogether, there are more than 35 banks and 55 credit unions operating in the area, with a total of about 540 branches. Notable institutions with their headquarters in the Flint area include Chemical Bank, Isabella Bank, Dow Chemical Employees' Credit Union, Wildfire Credit Union, and Dort Federal Credit Union.
