Banking in the Great Falls Area
Great Falls is a city of about 60,000 people in north-central Montana, about 100 miles south of the Canadian border. Including the surrounding towns of Havre, Lewistown, Shelby, Conrad, Glasgow, Chinook, Chester, Cut Bank and Fairfield, The Great Falls metro area has about 85,000 people. The city got its start as a mining town and grew to be Montana's largest city in the 1950s and 60s. However, as the mining economy declined, so did the city and its population, which now is about the same as it was in 1960.
Because of its size and relative isolation from large cities, Great Falls has a good-sized banking industry. There are 15 banks and 11 credit unions that have their headquarters in the Great Falls area, and overall there are more than 30 banks and 15 credit unions with a total of about 130 branches operating in the area. Notable institutions include Independence Bank, First Community Bank, Montana Federal Credit Union, The Citizen's State Bank of Choteau, Montana, and 1st Liberty Federal Credit Union.
