Banking in the Greensboro Area

Greensboro is the third-largest city in North Carolina, with a population of about 280,000 residents. Greensboro's officially designated federal metropolitan area has about 725,000 people, but the larger region, including Winston-Salem, has about 1.6 million people. Other notable cities in the region include Burlington, High Point, Asheboro, Kernersville, Lexington, Mount Airy, Reidsville and Clemmons.

The financial sector is a major employer in the Greensboro region, with more than 18,000 people with financial-related jobs. It has been and remains a major banking center, although there are fewer banks headquartered in the region than there used to be. Currently, 13 banks, 21 credit unions call the Greensboro area home. Notable institutions whose headquarters remain in the region include BB&T, Bank of North Carolina, Yadkin Valley Bank and Trust Company, NewBridge Bank and CommunityOne Bank. BB&T, which is the most well-known bank in the region, is also the oldest one still operating, having been established in 1872. A large number of other banks have operations in the Greensboro area, and overall there are more than 40 banks and 30 credit unions with a total of about 640 branches in the region.
