Banking in the Lafayette Area
Lafayette, Indiana, is a city in west-central Indiana that's about 60 miles from Indianapolis and 100 miles from Chicago. The city itself has about 67,000 people, with about 173,000 in the larger metro area, including West Lafayette, which is the home to Purdue University. Other notable cities in the region include Fowler, Otterbein, Battle Ground, Boswell, Oxford, Dayton, Earl Park, and Stockwell.
Like many cities whose economy is largely based on a large university, Lafayette does not have a large banking presence. There are just four banks and three credit unions with their headquarters in the region. Notable institutions with their headquarters in Lafayette or the surrounding region include Purdue Federal Credit Union, Lafayette Community Bank, Industrial Federal Credit Union, Fowler State Bank, and The Farmers and Merchants Bank, which is the oldest institution still operating in the area, having been established in 1903. There are many other banks and credit unions with operations in the area, however. Overall, the Lafayette area has a presence from about 25 banks and seven credit unions with a total of approximately 100 branches between them.
