Banking in the Minot Area

Minot is a city of about 45,000 people in north-central North Dakota. Including its surrounding area, the Minot region has more than 70,000 people, making it the fourth-largest city in the state. Other cities in the area include Dickinson, Williston, Rugby, Beulah, Bowman, Sidney, and Watford City. Minot's economy has for decades been driven by a nearby Air Force base. In recent years, the nearby Bakken shale oil formation has also boosted the area.

Whether because of its relative isolation or due to the newfound oil wealth, Minot has a huge banking industry for a city of its size. There a 45 banks and 20 credit unions with headquarters either in Minot or one of the nearby cities. Notable institutions based in the area include First International Bank & Trust, American Bank Center, Starion Financial, First Western Bank & Trust, and Dakota Community Bank & Trust. The oldest bank headquartered in the area that is still operating is Merchants Bank, which was established in 1897. Altogether, the Minot area has about 340 branches from more than 75 banks and 25 credit unions.
