Banking in the Reno Area
Reno is a city of about 240,000 people in northern Nevada right on the border with California. Reno is the third largest city in Nevada behind Las Vegas, as well as the second largest metropolitan area after the Las Vegas area. Including surrounding cities in both Nevada and California such as Sparks, Carson City, Fallon, South Lake Tahoe, Susanville, Gardnerville, Winnemucca, Incline Village, Dayton, the wider Reno area has about 440,000 people.
Despite its size, relative isolation, and robust casino industry, Reno does not have much of a banking industry. There are only four banks and nine credit unions with headquarters in Reno or the surrounding area. Notable institutions that are based in the area include Charles Schwab Bank, Farm Bureau Bank FSB, Heritage Bank of Nevada, Greater Nevada Credit Union and Financial Horizons Credit Union. Sierra Pacific Federal Credit Union, which was established in 1936, is the oldest institution headquartered in the area that still operates there today. Altogether, there are more than 20 banks and 15 credit unions with operations in the area with a total of about 250 branches.
