Banking in the Yuma Area
Yuma is a city in southwestern Arizona, close to the Mexican border. The city itself has a population of right around 90,000 people, but the wider Yuma metropolitan area has more than 200,000 people. Other main cities in the Yuma area include: El Centro, Brawley, Calexico, Holtville, San Luis, Wellton, Calipatria, Imperial, Somerton.
Yuma has very little industry, and it often has the highest unemployment rate of any city in the country. Eight of the top 10 employers in the area are government, and the top private employers are in the service industry. As such, Yuma does not have many banks based locally. There are just three banks and three credit unions based in the Yuma region. Among them are Sun Community Federal Credit Union, The Foothills Bank, 1st Bank Yuma, AEA Federal Credit Union, and Community Valley Bank. The oldest financial institution still operating in the region is the AEA Federal Credit Union, which got its start in 1942. Including banks headquartered elsewhere that have operations in and around Yuma, the area has about 15 banks and five credit unions with a total of approximately 70 branches.
